Donna + Sue's Backyard Wedding | Medicine Hat Wedding Photographer

I think Donna and Sue's wedding will be one that I will remember for a very long time.

We first received a text message one evening from Donna's daughter-in-law inquiring into our elopement photography services for a "retired couple" who had been together for years and finally tying the knot in a very small backyard wedding ceremony. Once we had booked the date, she then told me it would be a gift and the couple's name was Donna and Sue - my heart skipped a beat knowing who the couple was! I had met Sue years ago when I started working at Medicine Hat College. It was such a pleasure to have worked with someone so bright and engaging.

I could not believe how lucky I was to be the one to share in the momentous occasion. Only a handful of close friends and relatives were in attendance, but the amount of joy coming from this small backyard was overwhelming. There was a reading from The Velveteen Rabbit that had everyone in tears when they read, "You are real because she loved you."

Then the moment came to present the newly weds to the crowd. The atmosphere took a giant leap from tears of joy to dancing for joy! The song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams blasted through the speakers and the couple immediately started dancing, pulling everyone out of their seats to join in. It was just a mob of people dancing and hugging. What an incredible way to ring in a marriage! One of the happiest moments I have ever witnessed.

When it came time for portraits, everyone wore the scarf they received from this self-proclaimed tree-hugging couple at the wedding. We each got to choose our own favourite colour from the rainbow of options, which was of course their wedding theme. Before the session was over, I asked to photograph their wedding rings. They both had a number of pieces - each one with a meaningful story such as the coral necklace Sue wore which was given to her when she was just a baby. It was a simple representation for what this marriage was all about - a celebration of a life already shared... and because you're happy. Congratulations again, Donna and Sue!
